Lieutenant General James Harold Doolittle, 1896 - 1993
Heroic WW I and WW II Army Air Corps aviator and innovator who saw the value of aircraft as offensive weapons on the battlefield. In 1922 he made the first American transcontinental flight in less than a day's time. In 1927, he performed the first recorded, dangerous, outside loop maneuver. Between WW I and WW II, he won many "Trophy Cup" air races and established and held several World Speed Records. He pioneered instrumental flight (fly by wire) in 1929, when he was the first to take off, fly a set course and land without seeing the ground. In 1940, Doolittle was recalled to active duty to help build up American air power. By 1942, as Lieutenant Colonel, he led the famous "Doolittle Raid" against Tokyo and earned this nation's highest award, The Congressional Medal of Honor. In 1944 he commanded the mighty Eighth Air Force during the invasion of Europe. |
